Black Friday and Cyber Monday: Amazon vs the World - Share-A-Cart Data & Research

Shared on 18 December 2023, by Ed

It’s no secret that two of the biggest shopping days of the year are Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

We looked at data on shopping carts shared for the week of 11/21/2023-11/27/2023, and, unsurprisingly, we saw big shopping upticks on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday. While Black Friday has traditionally been a day where shoppers do most of their purchasing in-store, these days a lot of that commerce has moved online:

As tracked against the average purchase activity for the week, we see a slightly bigger spike on Black Friday than Cyber Monday (174% above the average vs 169% on Cyber Monday).

But what about Amazon? How does it fare versus all other retailers in aggregate across this holiday week?

While Amazon and its competitors saw the same increase in shopping on Cyber Monday, it’s the non-Amazon retailers who benefited most from Black Friday. Share-A-Cart supports over 150 different retailers, many of which have their roots in brick-and-mortar commerce (think: Walmart, Target, Gap, Macys, etc.). Perhaps this indicates a halo effect, where consumers look for deals online at stores that they would have actually visited in person in the past?
